Scrubbitts Wood

Scrubbitts Wood comprises of two areas gifted by Lady Phillimore to APC in 1909. It is situated on both sides of Scrubbitts Park Road and on one side by Gills Hill, Radlett.

This area consists of:

  • On the south side of Scrubbitts Park Road.
  • An area of woodland that is leased separately to the local Scout and Guide organisations. They both maintain their own headquarters and APC survey the trees under the Tree Management Plan.
  • An area leased to the Radlett Horticultural Society where their store is located.
  • On the north side of Scrubbitts Park Road.
  • An area of woodland that is kept as an open space with community access.
  • A footpath that leads from Scrubbitts Park Road to Gills Hill.
  • An area of grassland that runs along Gills Hill
  • The Gills Hill Report Centre.

This piece of land is undulating, so could be difficult to use if disabled (worth looking at). To access Scrubbitts Wood from Gills Hill there are some steps that have no rail, so an access survey may be advisable.

In 2017 APC commissioned an ecology survey that shows that the wood has elements of ancient woodland.

Purpose;

To be an area enjoyed by residents as an open space.

Future policy;

  • To continue the leases with the Scouts & Guides.
  • To create a maintenance plan for the wood taking into account any surveys that will be commissioned.
  • To carry out the necessary surveys regarding the air raid shelter in order to create a maintenance plan unless an alternative solution is required.
  • To liaise with various agencies to investigate what reasonable steps can be made to improve access to the area for those with disabilities.
  • To form, support and work with the ‘Friends of Scrubbitts Wood’ group.
