REBS Talking Newspaper provides a weekly recording of local news and items of interest to those who are blind, visually impaired or feeling isolated in the catchment area of Radlett, Aldenham, Letchmore Heath, Shenley and Elstree and Borehamwood. ( If a listener moves away they can ask to continue to receive the recordings as long as they wish.)
To introduce a new listener to the Talking Newspaper, one of our team will visit them to provide and demonstrate the playback device; this ‘Box’ is provided free of charge to each listener. If any problem develops at any time we will replace it.
Every Thursday evening we make a fresh and topical recording. We send an individual copy of the recording on a USB stick to each listener in a special yellow envelope recognized by Royal Mail for free postage. The listener puts the USB stick in their Box and can hear all or part of the weekly issue in their own time. The listener returns the USB stick in the same envelope, which is pre-addressed.
There is no cost to a listener for this service; the REBS Talking Newspaper is dependent on donations in order to fund its operation.
The talking newspaper relies on relatives, friends and neighbours to tell a visually impaired person about this service although it is not uncommon when someone starts to lose their sight for a social worker to contact the Talking Newspaper and the Visually Impaired Club, the sister organisation.

The operation of the Radlett, Elstree, Borehamwood and Shenley Talking Newspaper is carried out completely by volunteers. The recording team includes readers, editors, controllers and copiers.
