Phillimore Recreation Ground Improvements

Aldenham Parish Council (APC) is continuing to progress with the Phillimore Recreation Ground improvements. This project has four phases:

  • Phase 1 – installation of café to improve the experience of visiting the recreation ground
  • Phase 2 – improvements to the entrance into the car park
  • Phase 3 – improvements to the children’s play area to make it accessible to more people all year round (this is currently being discussed, further details to follow soon).
  • Phase 4 – to provide an access path around the main field to make it accessible to all, all year round.

In relation to Phase 1, APC carried out a consultation in Autumn 2021. Since then, we have been working with the project manager to respond to some of the concerns raised by residents. The planned built area has been reduced and the path connecting the café to the multi- use games area and public toilets has been relocated to inside the community wood, to the side of the proposed café. This will have the effect of reducing the amount of hardstanding that is being introduced onto the main grassed field.

The plans above were approved by APC Full Council on 28 September 2022, and an application for planning permission has been submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council. If permission is granted, then the next step will be to draw up tenders for operators to provide the catering facility as well as contractors to build the café.

In relation to Phase 2, an architect, IID, has been appointed to draw up plans for improvements which will be shared with residents, in due course.  

Winter Fair

We are almost ready for the Winter Fair at the Radlett Centre this Sunday. Hope to see you all there for an enjoyable afternoon from 2pm until 5pm with the light switch on at 4:45pm by the famous pantomime’s Dame Marc Kelly. There will be lots of festive attractions including Santa’s Grotto, bumper carz, bouncy castle, art and crafts stalls and much more. The tickets for all rides and Santa’s grotto will be available to purchase from the box office (£1 – all rides, £2 – Santa’s grotto), payments to be made by CASH ONLY please.

Carers Camera Club

“A Day in the Life…” Photo Exhibition
Carers in Hertfordshire Carers Camera Club.
The Carers Camera Club will be holding its third exhibition, “A Day in the Life…”, in The Radlett Centre. The exhibition is a way to give a voice to the carers in the Carers Camera Club by showing people what being a carer means. It allows members to show their work, and demonstrate their talents.

Suspicious Emails

Dear Watch Member,

We have been alerted to reports of a criminal group who are mimicking the email domains of reputable law firms, attorneys, and debt collecting agencies to send emails asking for overdue payments.  They are indiscriminate as to which industry they target.

The emails are designed to look very similar to those of the reputable organisations they are mimicking.  They use “social engineering” to convince the recipient to carry out a particular action, such as to pay an outstanding invoice. Invoices are sent as a PDF file and appear the same as a legitimate invoice but the banking details have been replaced with those of the criminal group.

Indicators of “spear phishing” emails:

  • Suspiciously spelled email addresses.
  • Use of language prompting urgency or risk such as: “Urgent!” “Overdue!”
  • Unexpected change of payment details.
  • Threats that the “problem” will be raised to a manager or executive.

If you believe you have found a suspicious email: 

  • Do not reply, click on any links or open any attachments
  • Compare the email address with a previous known contact address.
  • Confirm any requests through a separate email address or phone number found on the company website or from previous correspondence known to be genuine (do not use contact details on the suspicious email).
  • Escalate concerns to a colleague or line manager (but do not forward the email).
  • Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to: report@phishing.gov.uk.

If you believe you have sent money as a result of a suspicious email, contact your bank immediately.  You can report incidents of cyber crime to ActionFraud.police.uk  By doing this, you’ll help to prevent others becoming victims of cyber crime.

Stay safe and warm this winter with free of charge electric blanket and portable heater testing run by Trading Standards and Fire & Rescue Services. If you have an electric blanket (or heater) that you are going to use this winter due to concerns about rising energy bills, you’ll want to be sure that it is safe. Make your health your priority

A Community Wellbeing Fair is coming to Borehamwood next week to provide residents with information about wellbeing support available locally. Anyone wanting practical advice and support to improve their wellbeing can attend the Community Wellbeing Fair, organised by us, in conjunction with the Board of Trustees of Allum Manor, on Friday 21 October from 1pm – 5pm at Allum Manor on Allum Lane, Borehamwood. The event will feature a market place with over 20 stalls offering wellbeing information services and advice from various local groups, such as Carers in Herts, NHS Wellbeing Service, Herts Mind Network, Sebby’s Corner and many more. Temporary Closing of Harper Lane, Shenley

NOTICE is given that owing to the likelihood of danger to the public whilst bridge repair works are being undertaken, all traffic is temporarily prohibited from using that length of Harper Lane, Shenley from its junction with A5183 Watling Street north eastwards for a distance of approximately 140 metres.

The work is expected to take 21 days to complete when started on the 29 September 2022. An alternative signed route will be provided for traffic whilst the road closure is in place.

The prohibition imposed by this notice can remain in force for up to 21 days.

Don’t miss out on your free tree!

We are giving away 5,000 trees as part of the ‘Your Tree Our Future’ campaign – and time is running out to reserve your FREE tree or hedgerow pack.

In just two weeks half of the trees allocated to Hertsmere have been reserved, so register today.

Residents can choose one or more trees from eight different species – carb apple, field maple, hawthorn, hazel, hornbeam, rowan, silver birch, wild cherry – or a hedgerow pack, which contains 30 trees specially selected for creating an optimal hedge structure.

By giving residents the opportunity to plant trees, the council hopes to meet some of its sustainability aims, as tree planting has a positive impact on air quality, helps reduce the carbon in our atmosphere, supports biodiversity and can help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change. In addition, access to natural features has been linked with benefits to physical and mental health.

Councillor Seamus Quilty, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “I am delighted we have given away half of our trees, but would encourage our residents to reserve a tree now or potentially miss out. The more trees planted across the borough the greener Hertsmere will become.

“Trees are so important to improving air quality, increasing natural habitats for our wildlife and helping to combat environmental issues, which is why we have committed to this initiative. Each tree sapling planted locally will help in the fight against climate change and will benefit local biodiversity, as well as air quality, for years to come.

“The process is really simply. Simply go to www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/yourtree and reserve one or more of the eight trees species available or a hedgerow pack. You will be contacted later in the year with details on where and when to collect your trees. It’s that easy!”

Hertfordshire residents can visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/yourtree where they will be able to choose from a selection of eight different native species, or a hedgerow pack, which will be provided on a first come first served basis. Residents who have successfully requested a free tree will receive an email from the county council with details of how to collect them from a local pick-up point in December 2022. 

The ‘Your Tree Our Future’ scheme was created as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s Tree and Woodland Strategy, which sets out how the council will increase tree cover in the county. The project will be delivered in partnership with all ten district and borough councils.
